Dhoni eyes series win in South africa

Technorati Tags: ,,,,,

Vettori certainly wasn't writing off India's chances of achieving a first series success there.

"I'm not sure on what grounds they are playing," he said.

"That will have a huge bearing on it.

India are the No.

1 team in the world for a reason and they have started to play exceptionally well overseas." MS Dhoni didn't talk of the rankings game or final frontiers, but he did say that the wealth of experience within a settled squad could be pivotal as India look to do better than they did in 2006-07, when a poor couple of days in Cape Town cost them the series.

"I think adapting to the conditions will be crucial," he said.

We don't want to think too far ahead.

Utilising the break that we are getting now will also be crucial.

"There are plenty of players who have toured South Africa before, so gaining information from them will be really important.

But it will be a team effort.

Dhoni view on Raina performance

I would say we have performed 60 per cent of what we are capable of in this particular Test match. It may be for whatever reason. About the first two Test matches, we could only play upto 40 percent of our potential," the Indian captain said at the post-match media conference on Tuesday.

However, the skipper once again came in defence of an out-of-form Suresh Raina terming the player's bad patch as a result of being "mentally" exhausted having played a lot of cricket for last six months.

"Raina has been consistently playing for long period of time. Even I got a break during the tour of Zimbabwe but he also played there. Luckily, I have got a break of 10-15 days now which will help to freshen up and prepare for the South Africa series.

"But he hasn't got a break even in the first two matches of the New Zealand ODI series. There are times when it's more of a mental aspect than a physical one of not being 100 per cent there,"  Dhoni said, while backing the talented Uttar Pradesh youngster who has only scored 26 runs in four innings.

Dhoni regains form at Nagpur test

Dhoni his characteristic brutal shots, and New Zealand no respite. Just before and after tea, though, both the batsmen struggled with mobility, ambling for their runs. When the pain became too much, Dhoni asked for a runner, but the lack of footwork hurt his shots, and he gave Vettori a return catch in the latter's 196th over of the series.

Dhoni, who has also faced a lot of flak of late for his subdued batting, looked to hit his way out of bad patch with a flurry of boundaries off Kiwi pacers. He chose Andy McKay for some special treatment hitting him for three successive boundaries through mid-on, point and over cover respectively.

The most delightful of all Dhoni's strokes was the six he hit off McKay as he launched into the fullish delivery and heaved it over long.

Dhoni out gambhir in as captain

Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir will lead India in the one-day series against New Zealand after regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his deputy Virender Sehwag were both given a break.

Dhoni had on Friday stressed the need for time away from the game to ‘switch on and switch off’ as well as shake off niggles, and the selectors, who met here on Saturday night, acceded to the Jharkhandi’s request as they picked a 14-man squad for the first two matches.

It’s the first time since June, when India travelled to Zimbabwe for a tri-series with a less-than-full strength squad skippered by Suresh Raina, that Dhoni has got time off from competitive cricket.

Dhoni to own world famous gun

James Bond and Beijing Olympic Games gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra, India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to will own a world famous Walther rifle. A top importer of shooting equipment for leading Indian marksmen, indianshooting.com, received an invoice from Dhoni on October 21 for a
top-end rifle priced at 2,400 euros (Rs 14.8 lakh approximately).

“This is the best rifle Walther has. And I have received confirmation from the company that the amount has been received from the Indian skipper,” said Shimon Sharif, the website’s director and an international marksman who represented India in the 2003 World Cup in Seoul along with Bindra.

“A week after the Commonwealth Games, I got a mail from Dhoni wanting to buy a Walther rifle. At first we didn’t realise it was him as we get many mails from people wanting to purchase rifles and pistols. Our company is Walther’s representatives in India,” said Sharif.

“Later, when I saw the mail (again) around 2 am, I realised it was our very own India skipper, Mahi. I was overjoyed. I replied to him personally and, to my surprise, I got an answer in five minutes. He seemed very serious about buying the rifle.

“Dhoni had shown interest in the Carbontec air rifle, the one used by Bindra at the Beijing Olympic Games. The rifle is expected to reach India in a week’s time. He also told me that he has recently shifted to his new house,” said the Delhi-based Sharif, adding that Dhoni said he was a life-member of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), shooting’s apex body in India.

“Usually, I assemble and adjust the rifles for all our clients and shooters and would be happy to do it for Mahi as well. Every rifle has to be adjusted as per the shooter’s specifications. Till now, people at Walther don’t know about their latest high-profile client in India,” said Sharif, adding,

“It’s good to see top cricketers being attracted to shooting.”
